Luxury bus hits FRSC official to death in Ogun

An official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) yesterday lost his life while controlling traffic along the Ososa River, in Odogbolu local government area of Ogun state. The deceased, Olasoji Olaleye, was said to have been hit by the luxury bus heading to Lagos from the East and he fell into the river. One of the colleagues of the deceased, who preferred anonymity, said that Olaleye was on the bridge controlling the towing of vehicles that were earlier involved in an accident before the impatient driver hit him into the river. “He was directing vehicles coming from Ijebu-Ode axis to pass through the opposite lane alongside other security agents before the luxury bus driver who was on top speed hit him and he fell into the river,’’ said the eyewitness.

A South Carolina father has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after his two-year-old son picked up a gun that was laying on a table and shot himself dead on Christmas day. Sincere Tymere Smith, who would have turned 3 in March, fatally shot himself in the chest at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday at his family’s Conway home. Smith died while being rushed to a hospital in Charleston.

        About 200 students may have been expelled by the authorities of Covenant University, Cannanland, Ota, Ogun State, recently for what was described as “disregard of paramount core values.”

Frustrated and angered by the development, some of the affected students who gave account of what happened battled emotions while narrating their situations to Saturday Vanguard recently. They however pleaded with the school authorities to tamper justice with mercy in order to save their future.

Sex-starved husband demands N1.2m refund from 16-year-old wife’s parents

Mallam Mukailu Naibi of Keke Village, Kaduna, whose wife allegedly starved him of sex for two years, on Wednesday demanded N1.2 million as compensation from the wife’s parents before an Abuja Area Court. Naibi, while testifying at the resumed hearing of the case, told the court that the amount, covered the bride price he paid before marrying Maryam, his wife, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.He also told the court that the amount also covered the cost of damages done to the house after Maryam allegedly set the house on fire before fleeing to court to seek divorce.

He also tendered written documents with records of all expenses made on his estranged wife and her parents, in addition to a witness to testify in his favour.

Naibi, aged 37, had told the court that his wife had refused to make love to him since they got married two years ago.He also accused her of setting their house on fire.

“Your Worship, since we got married two years ago, my wife never allowed me to make love to her for once and all my attempts to do it always led to fighting.

“I married her out of love and I still love her, but with this development, I have no choice, but to ask the court to grant her divorce wish for the sake of peace,” Naibi said.

In her testimony, Maryam, who is 16 years old told the court that her husband made love to her once, but that she was not impressed and so she wanted a divorce.

“I don’t love him, I don’t love anybody who bears his name and I hate anybody who loves him,” she told the court.

Maryam’s mother who was her only witness in court denied most of Naibi’s claims but admitted some, saying that Maryam’s father was in a better position to clarify some issues.

The judge, Haruna Masanawa, after hearing all the submissions of the parties in the case, ordered the court’s registrar to summons more witnesses, including Maryam’s father.

He adjourned the case till January 16, 2013 for further hearing.

Professor Hyacinth Ngong Mbibu,a leading urologist with the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Shika, Zaria, Kaduna state, was last night shot dead shortly after closing from work. The deceased is the Head of the Department of Surgery at ABUTH. It was reported that Mbibu was killed at about 8pm by unknown assailants riding on a motorcycle. There are however different accounts as to how the professor was killed. One account stated that the gunmen might have trailed the surgeon to the Maraba Clinic and Maternity located at Kabama Layout, near Stadium, in the Sabon Gari local government area, which was jointly owned by him and two other persons. Police Intensifies Search For Importers Of Bangers

The Police in Lagos have intensified efforts to arrest persons involved in the storage of bangers that exploded, burnt houses and killed one person on Wednesday at the Jankara Market. The Commissioner of Police, Malam Umar Manko, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that no fewer than 13 people were injured, four were still receiving treatment, and 12 houses were burnt. NAN reports that the fire, which an eyewitness said started at about 9:00 am was caused by bangers that were packed in a shop in Folawiyo House, located at No. 45, Ojogiwa St., Idumota.However, NAN gathered that the police at the Area A Command, Lagos Island, have embarked on seizure of firecrackers from hawkers and users within the area.NAN's investigation shows that the importers and some dealers in the firecrackers were on the run after the fire incident. Earlier, the leader of the community, Alhaji Olumegbon Isiaka, told NAN that one of the sellers lit a firecracker, which flew into a shop leading to numerous explosions that spread to other buildings. Isiaka confirmed the death of a 15-year-old boy in the fire and added that as many as 40 people were injured.

LAGOS STATE, SOUTHWEST NIGERIA                                                                                                         It started, like the popular cliché “wild fire” and before you know it, goods and property worth billions were destroyed. I am talking of Fire that ripped through Jankara market in Lagos Island, Nigeria’s largest city Wednesday (Boxing Day) morning. Atleast  30 people were injured while one life was lost. Some reports have it that the huge explosion which rocked a building storing fireworks started when a small boy ignited a firecracker popularly known as ‘knockout,’ which hit some of the stocks of unsold fireworks in the building. The blast and fire led to panic in the densely packed area of Lagos, a city of some 15 million people, with residents jumping from windows to flee and others salvaging goods from their shops in the market’s neighbourhood. That happened in the morning hours. At about 5pm the same day, fire caught up with a building at Fola Agoro in Somolu area of the same Lagos razing down the top floor of a building. Lagos State Fire Service team was able to put out the fire but not before all personal effects on the floor was lost. The cause of the fire was not clearly identified as eyewitnesses said it was caused by an electrical spark while others said it was caused by cooking gas. No casualty was recorded as residents of the building, which is reportedly owned by Alhaji Fola Agoro, were said to have travelled for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

WHAT IS IT BETWEEN GOV. OKOROCHA AND SENATOR CHRIS ANYANWU

What is it really between the Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha and Senator Chris Anyanwu? We heard some rumours in the past but they remained extremely “improbable”. But with the recent “convoy clash”, we might as well be getting somewhere. However, they are both of the same party; All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and they both contested, at their various levels, one of the fiercest elections of 2011 defeating the then incumbent party(People’s Democratic Party,PDP). While Gov. Okorocha defeated his predecessor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, Senator Chris Anyanwu who was then a serving senator under PDP, left the party after she was allegedly schemed out of getting the party’s ticket, and contested under APGA, defeated Dr. Kema Chekwa of PDP and was returned to the Senate. Looking back at the camaraderie between the two during that election, and the intrigue that followed, one was rather shocked when the news filtered in that there has been personality clash between them. Nevertheless, if what Senator Anyanwu said recently regarding the “convoy clash” is anything to go by, then there is more than meets the eyes. More confusing is the fact that she claimed to have visited the governor earlier at the government house where they both felicitated with each other. So is it possible for the same man (Governor Okorocha) to watch while her (Sen. Chris) drivers were being manhandled and a security detail attached to the governor, according to Senator Anyanwu, even threatened to shoot her. Though one of the governor’s aides has refuted Senator Anyanwu’s allegation, the big question therefore is “Who is telling the Truth/Lie and what exactly is between the duo”? Okorocha Ordered Attack on My Convoy – Sen. Chris Anyanwu

Senator Chris Anyanwu yesterday accused Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha of ordering his security detail to attack her convoy and beat up her security men.
Wednesday’s convoy clash was the height of the personality clash between the two public officials both of whom were elected on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

But Okorocha’s spokesman Ebere Uzoukwa denied the claims by the senator. He said the senator breached protocol by using a siren, which has been banned in the state.

                          ANOTHER FIRE IN LAGOS ON BOXING DAY

Another boxing day tragedy struck in Lagos when a storey building on Fola Agoro street in Somolu area was gutted by fire at about 5:30pm. Eyewitnesses disclosed that the fire was caused by a cooking gas equipment which triggered an electrical spark in the building. From information gathered, the occupants of most affected apartments on the top floor were out of Lagos on holiday as at the time the incident occurred. It however took the intervention of two fire service squads from Isolo and Agege area of Lagos to bring the raging inferno to a halt. The lower floor of the building used as commercial shops wasn’t affected by the fire.

Details of casualties haven’t been confirmed yet, but one of the neighbours who made frantic efforts to fetch water in order to put out the fire was seriously injured and is currently being treated for smoke inhalation.

You will recall that about 40 people were injured as a fireworks warehouse caught fire , leading to several explosions that razed eight houses in Jankara area of Lagos the same day.
