ANOTHER PROFESSOR GUNNED DOWN

Professor Hyacinth Ngong Mbibu,a leading urologist with the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Shika, Zaria, Kaduna state, was last night shot dead shortly after closing from work. The deceased is the Head of the Department of Surgery at ABUTH. It was reported that Mbibu was killed at about 8pm by unknown assailants riding on a motorcycle. There are however different accounts as to how the professor was killed. One account stated that the gunmen might have trailed the surgeon to the Maraba Clinic and Maternity located at Kabama Layout, near Stadium, in the Sabon Gari local government area, which was jointly owned by him and two other persons. The gunmen went straight to the doctor’s office, fired several gunshots at him and fled the scene. Another account stated that the professor used
to drop two nurses at home every night after they closed from work at his hospital. He was said to have dropped the first nurse at her house and had taken the second one home before he met his fate. According to report, the nurse had just dropped from Mbibu’s car when she was accosted by a waiting man, whom she recognised.The gunman called out her name and she said hello to him, but then he suddenly shot her in the arm. The gunman having shot the lady nurse, proceeded and shot Mbibu in his car, killing him instantly. The nurse was said to have been rushed to a hospital, where she was said to be in critical condition. Prof. Mbibu, a multiple award-winner, was an indigene of Takum in Taraba State and he was described by a close associate as “a  very hardworking and impartial professor.” “For about eight years now, the late Professor Mbibu has been among the coordinators of West African College of Surgeons,” the associate added.
