 MICHELLE OBAMA’S METAMORPHOSIS
"Barack didn't pledge riches, only a life that would be interesting. On that promise he delivered."- MICHELLE OBAMA

Michelle Obama was born Michelle LaVaughn into a humble background in 1964 (17th January). Her father Fraser, a pump operator, died of complications from multiple sclerosis in 1990. Her mother, Marian, a stay at home mother, raised her together with her brother Craig in their South Side Chicago home. According to Michelle in her interview with Vogue magazine in 2007, "There's nothing magical about my background,".
Michelle joined Craig, a star basketball player, at Princeton University, before graduating from Harvard Law School in 1988. Working as a lawyer at a Chicago firm in 1989, she met Barack Obama, a summer associate and was mentoring him. She eventually fell for the Hawaii-bred community organizer turned lawyer, with whom she attended meetings in church basement. In her words, "He connected with me and everyone in that church basement ...The authenticity you see is real, and that's why I fell in love with him," she told Essence magazine. After dating for three years, Michelle and Barack tied the knot giving birth to their two daughters(Malia on April 7th,1998 and Natasha “Sasha” on 6th October,2001). Michelle once said "Barack didn't pledge riches, only a life that would be interesting. On that promise he delivered."

Today she is indeed enjoying the interesting life with the world’s most powerful person, Barracks Obama, as the first lady of the United States of America (USA).

OBY EZEKWESILI VS LABARAN MAKU: WHO SHOULD NIGERIANS BELIEVE?
Oby Ezekwesili

Laraban Maku
On the 24th of January,2013, at the convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), a former Vice President for Africa in the World Bank and two time minister in the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, delivered a keynote address saying that the administrations of late President Umaru Yar’Adua and President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan frittered $67 billion in five years. The media was agog with the revelation.
Expectedly, the federal government has reacted through the Information Minister, Labaran Maku, expressing surprise about the position of Madam Ezekwesili. Maku said this on Sunday in his rejoinder published by Premium Times that Ezekwesili in her account showed limited understanding of government finances. He said “Nigeria did not have up to $67 billion in its accounts, based on the records of the Central Bank of Nigeria.” He added that what was available in all the accounts Ezekwesili referred to was “$43.13 billion.”
With this from the Information Minister, another round of argument will sure ensue in the coming weeks and Nigerians will watch “helplessly” as the “drama” unfolds.
But come to think of it, could Oby Ezekwesili, a former Vice President of Africa in the World Bank and two time minister be wrong or is a current minister, Labaran Maku, trying to do his work?
While Nigerians await the expected debate, who really should they believe concerning their collective “patrimony”?

Meet The world's 'poorest' president, Jose Mujica of Uruguay

"I'm called 'the poorest president', but I don't feel poor. Poor people are those who only work to try to keep an expensive lifestyle, and always want more and more."-President Jose Mujica

All the president's wealth - a 1987 VW Beetle

It's common to see politicians' lifestyles far removed from those of their electorate. Not so with the President of Uruguay. Meet the Jose Mujica, the president - who lives on a ramshackle farm on the outskirts of Montevideo with his wife and three-legged dog and gives away 90 per cent of his monthly salary, the equivalent of £7,500, away to charity leaving him with just £485 a month to live off.
The part-time farmer's proudest and most valuable possessions are his tired-looking Volkswagen Beetle and his three-legged dog Manuela. Only two police officers and Manuela, a three-legged dog, keep watch outside his ramshackle home which is a far cry from the country’s grand presidential palace in the capital city of Montevideo.
The president's austere lifestyle is a world away from that of many politicians in the world who have been caught out trying to manipulate the government’s treasury to boost their income. Do you think African politicians will envy this man? Drop your comment.

Stay Single, Die Younger, Say Scientists

Men and women who are married or in long-term relationships are more likely to survive to old age than singletons according to research. Scientists have found that being married, or being in a permanent stable relationship, could lead to a longer life. Middle-aged people without a spouse or long-term partner were discovered to be at greater risk of premature death than those who were settled down with their other half, they said.So stark was the difference in outcomes that those who never married or settled down with a long-term companion were more than twice more likely to die in middle age than those who had been in a stable relationship throughout their adult life. Even when personality and risky behaviours were taken into account, marital status continued to have a major impact on survival into old age, researchers from Duke University Medical Center in the US said.

SURPRISE: Chukuku Village–Where it is taboo to fry ‘Akara’

Communities are known for particular things, some for agriculture, some for artworks, some for eating a particular food and some for a peculiar dance. But when things go from the normal to the absurd, like a community where it is a taboo to fry bean cakes (akara), it calls for surprise. No one could give the reason for this law or maybe they know but chose to be mum. Chukuku community in Kuje Area Council has been in existence for many years but in all these years, it is against traditional laws to engage in frying bean cakes called akara in local parlance in the community. Akara is a local delicacy made from grounded beans which is seasoned, spiced and deep fried in oil. It is enjoyed with pap, tea or used as a filling for bread. Chukuku village, a traditional Gbagyi settlement with all semblance of a traditional community, predominantly inhabited by indigenous people is located between Gwagwalada and Kiyi village (ABUJA,NIGERIA).
