KANO BANS “OKADA”
Kano
State has joined the league of states
that have restricted the use of motorcycles popularly called “Okada” in the
Southern Nigeria and “Achaba” in most northern states in Nigeria, within their metropolis. Lagos recently banned them from the major roads, while in Akwa Ibom
and Rivers, it is a total ban.
The
Kano State acting governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in a
state broadcast made in Hausa said the decision to ban motorcycles was inevitable following series of attacks by
gunmen on motorbikes, the latest being the one made on the lives of Emir of
Kano and his two sons.
He therefore appealed to
Kano citizens to show support and concern at
times like this as the steps were taken in line with emerging security
challenges facing the state. He further pointed out that for the safety of
individuals and for maintaining peace and stability in the state, all
motorcycles operating within the 44 Local Government Areas in
Kano must be registered.
